週に何回か私は家の柴犬の散歩をしていますが、同じくらいの頻度で舞鶴市の魚市場に通うことにしています。また、月に１回、舞鶴とは日本列島をはさんで反対側にある和歌山県串本町の魚市場にも通っています。魚市場にならぶ魚を見ていると、日本海の舞鶴と太平洋側の串本で共通する種もいますし、それぞれでしか見ることができない種もいます。年ごと、季節ごとに獲れる種も変わりますし、潮の流れ方でそうなることもあります。もっと視野を広げて日本列島の各地で獲れる魚をみていると、それぞれの魚の分布に一定のパターンが見えてきます。
私の興味は、なぜそこにさまざまな魚がいるのか？ということです。それぞれの種の形や遺伝子に残された情報から、その種がどのように生み出されたのか、どのようにそれぞれの場所に適応してきたのかということを調べています。

Why are there so many different species of fish?

I make it a rule to walk my shiba-inu a couple of times in a week, and to visit the fish market in Maizuru City, Kyoto at the same frequency. I also visit the fish market in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama, located at the opposite side of Maizuru across the Honshu Island. Some fish species are distributed both in Maizuru and Kushimoto, but others are not. The fish fauna of each locality can be changed by the year, by the season, and sometimes by the route of currents.
By having a wider point of view, we can understand the distributional pattern of each fish species along the Japanese Archipelago. One of my primary interests is “Why are there so many different species of fish?” By using the morphological and genetic techniques, I aim to elucidate how they have speciated and they have adapted to specific environments.
