2014年12月14日（日）、キャンパスプラザ京都において、第2回森里海シンポジウム「人と自然のつながり」を育てる地域の力 －淡海（おうみ）発・企業の挑戦－を行いました（参加者 約150人）。参加した学生の感想を紹介いたします。

On 14th December, I attended the symposium organized by the educational unit for studies on the connectivity of hills, humans and oceans (CoHHO Program), Kyoto University. In this symposium, four guest speakers were invited to share their experience about the application of environmental conservation in enterprises from different perspectives including governmental, agricultural companies, manufacturing companies and banks. Such a symposium is a very good and precious chance for people who are interested in such topics to communicate with enterprises directly, especially for us students, it makes us realize the gap between reality and theories, which will drive us to consider how to put what we have learnt in classrooms into practice.
Within the four topic speeches, I’ve got a deep and positive impression after listening to the speech given by Mr. Kenichi Maeda from KOKUYO PRODUCT SHIGA CO.LTD. This is a small-sized papermaking company based on the bank of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, with almost 40 years of history. Since 2007, this company began to develop, make and sell paper products made from reed living around Lake Biwa. With the enlargement of the market, they try to send messages about local ecological integrity and CSR to consumers through their beautiful and high-quality products. In addition, they also put a lot of effort to organize volunteer activities to mobilize more people to pay attention and make contribution to the protection of Lake Biwa.
There are two main reasons why I think their speech and achievement are attractive and impressive to me. Firstly, the region of Lake Biwa is very similar to my hometown, a small city in Jiangsu Province, where there is a big fresh water lake just like Lake Biwa. Reed is a very common plant in shoal waters in Northern Hemisphere. It is a very important part of the local ecosystem, mainly offering shelters to wild animals, meanwhile, it is also a part of the landscape. In the mind of people living near these waters, reed marsh is the link and intermediary zone between human society and wild natural world. However, with urbanization and modernization, reed marshes are dying-off. Mr. Maeda’s speech reminded me of the reed marshes in my hometown. I think the pattern of KOKUYO’s development could be a feasible example to similar companies in developing countries like China. Secondly, the strong sense of social responsibility and great motive power of Japanese enterprises touched me and earned my respect. One of the key factors for becoming a successful and respectable enterprise is that the company must give something good to the society while taking from it. This is the era of business. In other words, enterprises hold great power to influence the whole world. If enterprises are willing to put efforts on leading their consumers to the right direction, for instance, saving energy, saving food, living in harmony with the environment, etc., I believe that the speed by which we will be solving environmental problems can become much faster, for sure. It is comforting to see that there are still some companies like KOKUYO which never give up on contributing their power to improve the relationship between human and environment, in which case, their attitude is worth being taken as a reference by many transnational enterprises like P&G and Unilever.
In summary, I am very grateful to have attended this symposium before my graduation. I hope CoHHO Program can offer more chances to students to communicate with experts working on the leading edge of environmental conservation and sustainability.

私はこのシンポジウムを通して、自分の将来についてより考えを深めることができました。
人と自然とがより良い関係を築くために、自分自身はどういう形で社会に貢献できるのか、シンポジウムに参加する前、始まりをむかえた就職活動にあたって、私はその答えを模索しているところでした。しかし疑問自体が漠然としていることもあって、具体的なイメージを思い浮かべられずにいました。また、環境保全と企業活動とは相容れないものという認識もあり、タイトルにある“企業の挑戦”という言葉には素直に惹かれ、何か面白い話が聞けそうだという期待を持ってシンポジウムに臨みました。
講演の中で紹介された3つの企業の取り組みの内容は実際、様々に興味深いものでしたが、私にとってとても印象的だったのは1つの共通点です。それは、いずれの事例も事業と関連した環境活動であるということです。単なるボランティアに留まらず、企業や事業にとっても意味のある活動を通して環境保全にも貢献しているという点です。一見環境保全と関わりのなさそうな企業の中で、こうした挑戦が行われていることを知って、純粋な驚きを感じると同時に期待感が湧き上がってきました。企業の中でも事業を通して環境保全に関わることができる、という新たな視野を得たことで、キャリア選択の幅もぐっと広がりました。
また、講演中のエピソードや、先生方の講評、パネルディスカッションを通して、企業や社会に対する研究者の果たす役割を改めて認識しました。こういった企業の取組に対して、専門家の立場から助言や評価を与えることもそうですが、大学などの教育現場や今回のような場を通してその企業の取組を広めることや、客観的な立場から特定の集団や地域の人だけで問題に取り組んでいては気づけない点を指摘することも重要な役割なのかもしれないと思いました。森里海連環学で言われる異分野間の連携と同様に、社会規模の問題に対処していくためにはその構成員である官学民それぞれの垣根を超えたつながりが広がっていく必要性を感じました。
そしてシンポジウム全体を通して、最も心に残ったのは嘉田前知事の「女性の力が、社会には必要です」というお言葉です。実際に女性として、母として、研究活動も仕事も家事育児も経験されてきた来歴を聞いたあとのその言葉は、どこか女性の強さを根底に秘めたような説得力がありました。語られた生き様や言葉の端々からもバイタリティが滲みだすようで、自分の母親より年嵩の女性に対して純粋にかっこよさを感じたことが殊更に印象的でした。また、企業内保育園のような企業側からのサポートや、実際に企業・大学問わず社会の中で活躍される女性の姿を見聞きした中で、今後社会に出てゆく女性として明るいビジョンを持つことができました。
